5/27/2012 1 Comment Forest Room 5 / Denver, COCreative little tapas joint in Denver that I just love!... like being inside a creepy forest wonderland. Menu with wood carved cover, napkins with bug stickers securing the silverware inside. Wood tables, stump chairs, wild scenes projected on the wall. Creepy cool vibe. Leaky ceiling attended to by placing a glass under the drips...

In 1997 I graduated from UW-Stout, in the tiny town of Menomonie, WI. Growing up in Milwaukee I was intrigued by small towns and really enjoyed my time up north. Over a decade later I find myself often returning to my old small town for viisits since my Uncle married someone from Menomonie! What are the odds? I don't know but it works for me!... My Aunt Carmen is a wonderfully creative bead artist that opened her store in 2005, starting out in the front of her mother's flower shop (yep, Flowers on Main where I ordered several fashion show flower arrangements long before knowing my future Aunt!). Now she's in the most perfect space. Very quaint, with selection you'd find in a much larger city. She offers several classes, and is a great teacher. I'm not the most patient student but she's taugh me several stich techniques. She's up on the latest jewelry trends and does great work for weddings and special occasions. If you're in the area, check it out! Besides flowers and beads, she sells her beautiful finished jewelry. 4/1/2012 0 Comments Art in BloomThis weekend is one of my favorite events at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Art in Bloom! Local floral designers are assigned a work of art to design an arrangement for. It's so inspiring to see all the beautiful colors, makes me want to get home and work on my flower gardens. They even have vendors selling garden items. One of my favorites, Urban Sense has a great selection of Seed Savers seeds. Last year I had great luck with Asparagus Peas and Strawberry Spinach so I picked a few more unusual varieties I look forward to planting soon. Below are a few of my favorites. The biggest question people that eat my food is where did it come from. We're lucky here in Milwaukee that we have access to some amazing things happening in the slow food movement.
First, is a service I've been using for a few years called Braise. I met David Swanson through a cooking class I took at Outpost co-op. He is a visionary that started going back to farms, teaching classes there and inspiring all things local by creating a delivery service (or CSA, community supported agriculture). There are several options for home delivery, the one I use I pay a yearly fee for delivery and I place an order by Sunday online and the food arrives Tuesday. It's an amazing assortment of local meats, dairy, vegetables, fruits, oils, grains and even chocolate! He recently opened a beautiful restaurant in Walker's Point, which is definately rising to be one of Milwaukee's best! http://braiselocalfood.com/ Second, is Will Allen's creation, Growing Power. It's an incredible system that is getting world wide attention for turning abandoned inner city space into a garden haven. They have chickens, tilapia, tomatoes, lettuce, compost making worms! My favorite are the sunflower sprouts. I first had in some salads at some fancy pants restaurants. Now I love that I can make my own fancy salads at home with these sprouts! They also have a small grocery store to help bring fresh produce that's not available locally. I'm lucky enough to have this service come to my work and I order a sustainable bag every week. They also have pick up sites around the city with several different options for sizes/prices. I'd recommend a tour to see how this amazing place works. http://www.growingpower.org/ |
